Homework

We believe that homework should support the teaching and learning that takes place in school by giving the children additional practice in key areas of the curriculum. The majority of homework is accessible through online devices.

Regular reading at home is crucial in maximising children's academic potential.  We ask parents to read with their children at least four times per week and log these reads on the Boom Reader. app. We have a comprehensive range of home reading books for the children to choose from. All children who complete at least four reads are rewarded with a short extra playtime. In addition, each week, one lucky winner is selected from each class to collect a hot chocolate and biscuit treat from the school office.

In Reception and Year 1, children are given spellings to learn each week. Older classes use Spelling Shed to practice spellings which are set weekly by the class teacher. The app is available to download or can be accessed on any browser on a laptop, tablets etc. 

We buy into two online schemes which help the children to achieve in maths. In reception and Year 1 up to Christmas children log in to Numbots to play games which test their knowledge of key mathematical areas such as counting and number bonds up to 10. Year 1 children move on to TTRockStars which enables children to work on times tables up to 12 x 12.

In addition to the weekly homework outlined above, children are given the option of completing additional homework that supports learning in any of the curriculum areas. Examples of this might be building a Tudor house, constructing a 3D model of the solar system or creating a fact sheet on any of the areas studied. 

Year 6 pupils are given additional maths and English home work to prepare them for the End of Key Stage assessments (SATs) and for high school.
