Year 5/6- Cypress

Year 5/6- Cypress

Welcome to Cypress Class- Year 5/6

In Cypress class, we aim to challenge, inspire and motivate pupils to work hard, aim high and most importantly, to enjoy their learning.  Lessons and activities are designed to be challenging yet interesting and aim to give our children the knowledge and skills they need in order to learn and grow.

Through a busy, yet varied timetable, children are encouraged to take an active role in their learning and through the different themes that we will be studying this year, get to experience new and exciting opportunities.  This is done both in the classroom and also through the many trips and visits that we organise throughout the year.

Key Information

Due to staff absence, Mr Woodward will now be teaching on Tuesday and Wednesday and Miss Parkinson will teach on Monday, Thursday and Friday.

Homework: We will continue to send homework on a Friday and ask that it is returned the following Wednesday so that it can be marked and new homework issued.  In addition to maths, English and theme homework, children need to ensure that they are learning their weekly spellings and returning completed sheets please.

Read for the Stars: Read for the stars starts again on Thursday 9th January and runs until the final Thursday of half term- 13th February.  All it takes is 5-10 minutes of reading 4 or more times a week to earn a star-this has to be on 4 separate days.  This half term, there are a maximum of 5 stars to earn.  Please support your child with this.  They can read anything and just need to record what they have read and need to obtain an adult’s signature.  Please ensure children have their reading diaries in school every day.

PE Kit: PE kits need to be in school every day from the start of term.  Our PE days are Monday and Wednesday.  PE kit consists of a plain white t-shirt, black shorts and black pumps or trainers.  An outdoor kit can be worn on colder days when we do PE outside.

Uniform: Please ensure that your child brings a coat so that they can still play out on colder days.  Children also need to observe the school’s uniform policy every day including correct footwear.  Trainers are not permitted to be worn. Please ensure children have a bag so that homework books, spellings, letters etc. are not lost.

Magic Breakfast: Breakfast club is open from 7.30am and Magic Breakfast starts at 8.20 at a cost of 50p. Any money sent into school should be in an envelope with your child’s name, reason and amount clearly labelled.  If you are in receipt of free school meals and access this service, please speak to a member of staff as you could be given a funded place.

After School Clubs: After school clubs are starting next week.  Please return letters as soon as possible as some clubs fill up very quickly.  Please indicate if your child is walking home or being collected on the return slip.

Mobile Phones: Please can children only bring mobile phone on days that they are walking home alone. If this is the case, mobiles need to be handed in to the class teacher and they are then stored safely in the office until the end of the day.  A letter needs to be signed to agree that your child is allowed their phone in school and to agree to the school policy.

Below is some information about our topic for this term is ‘The Invaders’ where we will learn about Vikings and Anglo Saxons. We are hoping to arrange an experience day in school to supplement our learning in class. Thank for your support and if you have any questions or concerns then please feel free to talk to us before or after school.  Please follow and keep up to date with our class on Twitter @coppullprimary where we will post photographs and reminders about events and anything going on in school.  If you need to contact us in school time, drop us a message on the class dojo.PE days are Mondays and Wednesdays.  Children need a full PE kit in school every day along with trainers.  An outdoor kit can also be sent in for colder days.  Alongside our regular PE lessons, we have access to our fantastic new running track on the school field where we aim to run a mile a few times a week.

Homework is given on a Friday to be returned the following Wednesday.  This will be maths or English work designed to consolidate work done in class.  We will sometimes supplement this with theme based homework.   Passwords have been sent out for Purple Mash, Active Learn and Times Tables Rockstars for additional online activities.  Children will also receive spellings on a Monday to be tested the following Monday.

Reading should be completed regularly at home to supplement reading done in class.  Read for the Stars rewards the children who read at home four times a week.  We incentivise the children to take part with weekly rewards and a prize draw at the end of the year.

Brass lessons take place on a Tuesday morning for our Year 5 children.  All the children have a brass instrument to take home for the year and are learning to play which will be showcased in the coming months.

If you have any concerns or need to discuss anything, our door is always open.  The class dojo is a really useful way of keeping in touch during the school day should you need to get a message to us. Additionally, please follow is on Twitter @coppullprimary to see what we are getting up to in class.
