Welcome to Cedar class!
In Cedar class, we aim to encourage children to be creative, independent and motivated. Our curriculum builds on the skills that the children have acquired throughout their school life. We believe that children should become increasingly independent in both their learning and organisation. We have lots of fun in Cedar class and enjoy learning about a wide range of topics including Electricity, Europe and the Egyptians. Challenging and supporting the children is at the heart of our curriculum and we strive to prepare them well so that they can continue to succeed in Year 5 and Year 6.
Our topic this term is “The Invaders” and is full of fascinating learning opportunities about the Anglo Saxons and Vikings that the children are really keen to get started with. In our English lessons, we are going to be focussing on the novel ‘Matilda’ by Roald Dahl. Additionally, in Science, we will be finding out about and investigating changes in materials.
Please make sure that your child is arriving at school in the correct school uniform as stated in the school policy (this includes appropriate black school shoes) and arrives on time. The gates open each morning at 8.40am ready for an 8.55am start and magic breakfast starts at 8.20am. Magic breakfast is 50p per child and includes breakfast and a drink. School tuck is available every morning break and the children in KS2 are encouraged to be responsible for their own money. Additionally, please send in a labelled water bottle that your child can use it throughout the school day.
This half term, in Year 4/5, we will be doing gymnastics as part of our PE sessions. During gymnastics lessons, the children do not wear footwear, however if they would like to they may wear the trampoline socks with grips. Also, please ensure that your child has their indoor PE kit (black shorts, white t-shirt and trainers) and outdoor PE kit (jacket/jumper and tracksuit bottoms) in school every day.
This half term, the children will continue receiving weekly homework. Homework will be given out on a Friday, to be back in school for the following Wednesday (earlier to receive Class Dojos). Spellings will be given out on a Monday and will be due back the following Monday. These spellings will be tested on the Monday. Homework will alternate between English and Maths each week.
Home Reading continues to be important in every year group in school. In Cedar Class, we are working towards everyone reading at home but we are not quite there yet! The learning benefits of regular reading are enormous and your help in this at home is invaluable: let’s work together to get everyone reading! We are continuing with the whole school ‘Read for the Stars!’ programme! Well done to all those children who received 5 or 6 stars last half term!
